P0442 engine code

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code , which means that it applies to many OBD-II equipped vehicles. The code indicates a small leak in the evaporative emissions, or EVAP, system, which is commonly caused by a loose gas cap or a small hole in the cap.

The EVAP is an integral part of the emissions control system, its role is preventing fuel fumes from reaching the atmosphere. This can happen for multiple reasons and a mechanic needs to diagnose the specific cause for this code to be triggered in your situation. What the code really indicates is that the EVAP system will not hold a specified level of vacuum for a specified amount of time when it performs its leak test.

This code number references a number that is given to you when you plug your truck into a OBDII scanner. Symptoms: With this code there might be no symptoms other than the Check Engine light. Evaporative emissions are just what they sound like: emissions. This video shows where and how to fix these obdcodes. Checked engine code and got codes : 1. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine. Some models require multiple failure cycles for service engine soon lamp illumination but a code is normally stored on the first failure.

Stored codes presented without malfunction indicator lamp illumination may be read as pending codes. Normally, no symptoms other than a stored code and a service engine soon lamp will be exhibited. Apart from the seal on the gas gap, you must check the purge valve and the fuel tank pressure sensor are both working correctly.

In order to troubleshoot any of the GM EVAP codes , it’s important to understand how the system works. The evaporative emissions system is designed to prevent raw gas vapors from entering the atmosphere. Pull over, retighten it, and take a look at the cap to see if it has any cracks in it. Just cant seem to get rid of it ! And that engine light is just so annoying to look at.

Anyone have this and find the issue? If you have rust forming around the filler tube, that would cause a large leak. If the O-ring on the gas cap is worn, distorte or missing, that would also be a large leak. Replacing the hose clamps will enable you to close other leaks off. There are tons of connections in the fuel system for fuel delivery, tank return, and vapor recovery.

I had to re-tightened the gas cap and manually remove the code and been driving the truck for over days (100)Miles and nothing has popped up. Two or Three years back I received this same code and a friend at the dealer ship mentioned to me about a common problem related to this which was fixed by changing out the Vent Valve located on the back end of the fuel tank. You may have a leak in the seal of the fuel cap, pressure sensor leak or defective sensor, vapor valves or lines leaking slightly.

Fortunately this is a series of codes that the retail auto parts stores don’t immediately try selling parts to the potential customer. Most commonly is a gas cap, but already changed that with a motorcraft cap and still came back. I see a large amount of problems with canister purge valves on these.

A few from the vent valve on the tank and a few gas caps. I need help with this one. Car came in with check engine light on ( code PO442=EVAP small leak).

I replaced the purge hose in front of the gas tank(it was cracked)I used the smoke machine and found no more leaks, days later the code PO4was on,I smoked the s. This is my first time on these forums. The ECM commands both the EVAP Purge Solenoid and the EVAP Vent Valve ON when the conditions are met in order to apply an engine vacuum to the EVAP system. It is not intended as repair advice and we are control leaks. Where is the purge solenoid vacuum hose and canister purge valve? There is one line that comes into the engine compartment you could check.

Follow the evap solenoid on the front passenger side of your intake manifold (near the FPR), one line has a small blue thing in line, then that line disappears under the IM, then goes back to the gas tank. I took the truck to the car wash and got the under carriage sprayed off because of a ton of mud. However, this code will be store cleared from the regular scan, and the MIL turned off if the condition is corrected. The first step in the repair process was replacing the gas cap with a cap from the dealer (many articles suggest that it is best not to use an aftermarket cap).

Location: Salisbury, Maryland. Has anyone run into this and if so, any suggestions on fixing the problem. Thanks in advance for any help. A non-EOM gas cap (one that is not fitted for your vehicle). I doubt the regular bckyard guy has access to either of those scan tools or the smoke machine.

Does this mean thers is a leak in the the system and that the overall mixture is getting richer. If you just filled up with gas and the light cam on afterwards,a loose gas cap. It may take as many as eight key cycles where the engine goes from cold to running temp.

The trouble code says the evap system detected a small leak. No check engine light back then. Some day, later, while driving I got check engine light on. Any suggestions on what to do next?

Replaced gas cap, cleared code , came back. Should I take it in for a smoke test? Also, from what I understan this is basically a fuel fume leak in the closed fuel system.

Doesnt affect performance or engine.
